——What is PLA?
Polylactic acid is a new polymer fiber raw material obtained from corn starch through bacterial fermentation and chemical synthesis. When the nonwovens made of biodegradable fiber raw materials are placed in the natural environment, they will gradually and slowly decompose into carbon dioxide and water under the action of enzymes, microorganisms, acids, alkalis and water, and finally disappear.
As polylactic acid is a bio renewable raw material, its manufacturing process produces less greenhouse gases than other polymers. Therefore, polylactic acid is a new type of environmental protection material, which has no pollution to the environment.
——Types of polylactic acid(PLA)
According to the molecular structure of polylactic acid, it is often divided into left-handed polylactic acid (PLLA), right-handed polylactic acid (PDLA), racemic polylactic acid (PDLLA), non-optical polylactic acid (meso-PLA), etc., and its properties are also different. Because of its crystallinity and high melting point (about 175 ℃), left-handed polylactic acid (PLLA) is generally used to spin fibers and nonwovens.
——Properties of polylactic acid(PLA)
Polylactic acid not only has the characteristics of good strength, chemical inertia and easy processing, but also has excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. Polylactic acid is degraded by hydrolysis. The oligomer generated by hydrolysis will eventually generate water and carbon dioxide under the metabolic action of microorganisms, which will not cause secondary pollution to the environment.
Polylactic acid is a light yellow or transparent polymer. It is a thermoplastic polymer material. Its properties are similar to polystyrene (PS) and polyester (PET). Conventional melt spinning equipment (such as spunbond method and meltblown production system) can be used to produce PLA nonwoven fabric.
——Characteristics of PLA non-woven fabric
(1)PLA nonwoven fabric have good weather resistance and high strength retention at room temperature; however, in working soil, seawater or activated sludge, they can be completely decomposed into water and carbon dioxide after different time, which has no pollution to the environment.
In addition, the carbon dioxide produced by its decomposition can be reused through plant photosynthesis to produce starch. It is a kind of pollution-free natural recycling material.
(2) In addition to decomposing in the natural environment, polylactic acid waste can be incinerated without toxic gas. In addition, it can also be used as compost, which is completely harmless to the environment.
(3) PLA nonwoven fabric have dyeability, good mechanical and processing properties, and can be processed into various products with a wide range of applications.
Note: at present, due to the few supply channels, high raw material prices and similar production process to PET, PLA needs drying treatment before use, and the production cost is also high, so it is only in the stage of development and promotion in China.
——Application of PLA Nonwoven Fabric
PLA nonwoven fabric are mainly used in agriculture and horticulture. They can be used as seed cultivation, seedling raising, frost prevention and weeding cloth;
In terms of medical and health care, PLA nonwoven farbic can be used as surgical clothes, surgical covering cloth, mask, etc; PLA nonwoven fabric can also be used as fabric of diapers, women's sanitary napkins and other physiological and sanitary articles;
In terms of daily necessities, PLA can be used as wiping cloth, kitchen water filter bag, residue filter bag or other packaging materials;
Using PLA nonwoven fabric to replace some non decomposable general plastic products plays an important role in reducing environmental pollution.
At present, domestic products are mainly polypropylene (PP) non-woven fabrics, which are non degradable and do not meet the requirements of green environmental protection and sustainable development. It will be a general trend to promote the application of biodegradable materials in the field of non-woven fabrics.
