Nonwovens production capacity and demand development in Southeast Asia

2022-07-22

According to the statistics of non-woven fabric output provided by INDA, China's non-woven fabric output accounted for 81% of the total output of Asia in 2020. Japan, South Korea and Taiwan together account for 9%, and India accounts for about 6%.

In the recent research of Inda and Edana, "2020-2025 global Nonwovens Market Survey Report", the rest of Asia is classified as "other Asia".

The "other Asia" region mainly includes Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, as well as smaller suppliers such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. "
The total output of Nonwovens in these countries has almost quadrupled in 10 years, and the total output will exceed 400000 tons in 2020.
At present, in terms of the overall layout of Nonwovens in Asia, the five ASEAN countries (Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) are expected to become the third largest Nonwovens Market in the world and one of the world's largest economies.

The impact of the COVID-19 on the nonwoven industry in these five countries is far less than the impact on their overall economy.

The surge in demand for protective products (protective clothing, masks) for domestic and export has promoted the production of nonwoven coiled materials.

As in other countries, consumers' demand for disinfected wipes and other wipes, as well as for sanitary products (diapers, etc.) is on the rise.

Driven by favorable population structure, economic conditions, growing market penetration and strong local and export demand, Southeast Asia is still a promising region for the nonwoven industry.

Although the COVID-19 has brought uncertainty, the impact of the recent economic slowdown in the region and the relatively small impact on manufacturing investment and consumer spending will be quickly addressed through the economic stimulus plan.

In Southeast Asia and China (market penetration is still low), the gradual increase in the market penetration of disposable and durable nonwovens is a positive factor for the good growth of nonwovens demand and exports in these major Asian markets.

With the passage of time, it is expected that the nonwovens producers in the above five Southeast Asian countries will benefit from the strong demand of China, Japan and other countries inside and outside the Asia Pacific region.
